Use of UPS and Backup Generators in a Micro Grid

Micro grids utilize various energy generators like wind turbines and solar panels, but there are periods when these renewable sources are inactive, necessitating backup generators to supply power. The integration of Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) with battery energy storage enhances micro grids by providing seamless power switching and ensuring clean power delivery to sensitive equipment during disconnections from the main grid.

How UPS and Backup Generators are used in a Micro Grid

A micro grid generally contains a number of different energy generators such as wind turbines and solar pv panels. However with renewables, there are times when these energy sources are not present (e.g. its not windy and its night time so no sun to power the solar pv panels).

This is the reason why micro grids generally incorporate backup generators, which can provide power to the micro grid (and therefore also to the larger National Grid) when there is not sufficient production from the renewable energy sources. The added incorporation of a UPS with its inbuilt battery energy storage allows for seamless switching (when the micro grid disconnects from the main grid) and provides conditioned clean power to your sensitive equipment such as telecommunications, IT and servers.
