UPS FANS – WHY REPLACE? - Power Continuity | UPS Systems | Diesel Generators.

The importance of UPS fans is highlighted as they cool critical components like inverters and rectifiers to prevent overheating. If fans fail, it can lead to component damage and failures. Regular maintenance, including checking for dust and replacing fans every five years, is crucial for prolonging UPS life. Signs of fan issues include unusual noise, appearance changes, and operation status. It is advised to contact professionals for repairs and maintenance. New fans may create temporary noises as they clear dust from the environment.

Uninterrupted power supply (UPS) fans play a crucial role on keeping the components of the equipment such as the inverter and rectifier cool enough to operate safely. If the internal UPS fans don't work properly, these components will run in much higher temperatures, which makes them deteriorate far quicker and fair you when you need them the most. These fans are found throughout the UPS in specific places to maintain the effective component cooling. In general, the bigger the UPS, the more and bigger fans you will find.

UPS fans will require replacement at least every 5 years dependant on the working environment of the UPS. This is down to the fact that they are mechanical components, so subject to their nature, these components tend to age, wear and tear. However, we encourage everyone to check the dust on the fan. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THE COMPONENTS IF YOU ARE NOT AN EXPERT. CONTACT YOUR UPS PROVIDER.

Having any sort of dust in the environment forces the fans to work harder to keep the air flowing, while the component switching inside the UPS generates significant amounts of heat too, that is why if you want to prolong the life of your UPS you have to service and maintain it.

What to look for with UPS Fans:-

NOISE –

  • First – Check the FAN noise is it continuous or intermittent?
  • Second – Continuous low-level noise is normal for UPS Fans.
  • Third – Intermittent noise can be fans wearing out- and no longer spinning centrally- bearings wearing out.
  • Forth- Dust can build up in the fans causing a smokey smell- check?
  • Lastly if the fan noise is high-pitched- something is caught in the fan.
  • Call an engineer to site to check and fix.

APPEARANCE–

  • First – NEW fans are shiny out of the box – Come in many sizes.
  • Second- Fans do become darker with age – No Issue.
  • Third – Are the fans rotating or stationary? Check they are all operational.
  • Forth – Stationary fans will cause the UPS to overheat- replace ASAP.
  • Lastly –You can sometimes lose one fan and still the UPS to operate.
  • BUT this is a warning before they all FANS begin to fail. ACT NOW don’t wait.

When NEW Fans are fitted , sometimes dust and debris from the floor underneath the UPS will get sucked up due to the power of the NEW fans. This will create some pinging noise for a short time until it is cleared. Nothing to worry about. It passes within 30 minutes.
