How to Check and Add Engine Oil to a Generator?
To properly check and add engine oil in a generator, follow these steps:
- Safety precautions: Ensure the generator is off and cooled down. Disconnect loads to prevent burns.
- Locate the oil dipstick: Found typically on the side or top, identifiable by a colored handle.
- Check the oil level: Remove and clean the dipstick, reinsert, then pull it out again to observe the oil level between minimum and maximum marks.
- Top up or drain oil: If low, add the correct type of oil; if high, drain excess until the level is correct.
- Clean up: Wipe away any oil spills. Diesel engine oil 15W40 is recommended. Always consult the engine manual for specific lubricants. Additional resources and service support are available.
Before checking and adding engine oil in a generator please read the below warning.
WARNING – Use only engine manufacturer’s recommended lubricant when topping up or replacing engine oil, NEVER check engine oil level or attempt to top up oil when engine running. The generating set engine oil is pre-filled in factory. However it is important to check the level of oil in the engine before any starting can take place, and also as part of a regular maintenance schedule. The engine oil should be replenished as necessary.
How to check the level of engine oil in a generator?
To check the level of engine oil in your generator, you can follow these steps:
- Safety first: Ensure that the generator is turned off, and any connected loads are disconnected. Let the generator cool down for a few minutes to prevent potential burns.
- Locate the oil dipstick: The oil dipstick is typically located on the side or on top of the engine. It may have a brightly coloured handle or be labeled as "oil".
- Remove the dipstick: Pull out the dipstick from its housing slowly and straight. Wipe off any oil on the dipstick with a clean rag or cloth.
- Insert the dipstick back to its housing: Insert the dipstick back where you took it from.

- Remove the dipstick again: Pull out the dipstick once again and observe the oil level. The dipstick will have markings indicating the minimum and maximum oil levels.
- Check the oil level: Examine where the oil level on the dipstick ends. The oil level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. If the level is below the minimum mark, you will need to top it up with some more oil. If the case is that it exceeded the maximum mark, you may have too much oil which can cause issues with the performance of the generator.
- Add or remove oil if necessary: If the oil level is low, add the appropriate type and amount of oil as recommended by the engine manufacturer, using a funnel to prevent spills an oil going onto other components. Check the oil again using the dipstick after adding oil. If the oil is too high, carefully drain some oil until it is within the recommended range.
- Clean Up: Once the oil has ben checked, topped up or replaced, clean up the area with a cloth or a rag , ensuring the generator surroundings are clean and free from oil residue.

How to add engine oil in a generator?
If you notice that the oil level is lower than it should be, it is important to take immediate action. To begin with, carefully locate the oil cap, which is usually found at the top or at the side of the engine. Gently remove the cap and proceed to add the necessary amount of oil to bring the level up to the recommended range.
After adding the oil, it is crucial to give it some time to settle before doing the measurement in order to get an accurate reading of the oil levels. Once you have allowed time for the oil to settle down, insert the dipstick to measure the oil level. When doing so, make sure the stick reaches the bottom. Then take the dipstick out again and make sure the oil is in between the recommended markings. If it is below the recommended markings, repeat this same process until the oil level is the recommended for the generator.
Once you are satisfied with the level, ensure the cap is securely placed where you have taken it from. Make sure that you clean any oil residues spilled with a cloth or a rag to prevent oil going into different components as it can stop the performance of the generator.
Diesel engine oil of type 15W40 is recommended for use in generator sets. For more engine-specific lubrication information consult the supplied engine manual. Our Power Continuity Engineers carry out a thorough generator service under our service and maintenance contracts.
