Vanadium flow batteries, also known as Vanadium redox batteries (VRB), are a type of rechargeable flow battery used in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) since the 1980s. They utilize vanadium ions in different oxidation states for energy storage, offering nearly unlimited capacity, long discharge periods without adverse effects, longevity of cycles, and easy recharging by replacing the electrolyte. However, they come with high initial costs, a lower energy-to-volume ratio, and a more complex system than traditional batteries like VRLA and Lithium-ion. - Lower energy-to-volume ratio.
- Therefore, a complex system, compared to VRLA and Lithium ion batteries.
Never the less, the Energy Storage System market that Vanadium flow batteries are able to achieve, will much depend on technological advances.
